In a recent webinar organized by SDXCentral entitled Future-Proofing SD-WAN: Building on Open and Cost-Effective uCPE we asked about deploying SD-WAN on uCPE. The audience consisted of enterprises, system integrators, and service providers, and they are clearly ready to migrate to a second-generation SD-WAN solution, based on uCPE.
Nearly 40% said they are ready to deploy within a year, and another third said they plan to deploy within 2 years. In total, more than 7 out of 10 are already planning SD-WAN deployments on uCPE!
This is in line with recent reports, for example from IHS Markit, Gartner, and IDC, who predicts a booming SD-WAN market (see for example this blog post for more details).
Among those who have plans for SD-WAN, 50% are planning for an in-house integration and 29% are planning to involve a systems integrator. 21% says they would buy a managed service.
In all cases, it is important that provisioning is made easy, for example by using zero touch provisioning (ZTP) and centralized uCPE management. Not all locations where a uCPE will be deployed will have skilled IT staff available to handle the installation procedure, so the installation needs be simple enough to be handled by any staff available.
uCPE is quickly becoming the preferred infrastructure for SD-WAN. Enterprises are looking for open and future-proof solutions that provide a flexible platform for network evolution, while systems integrators and communication service providers see an opportunity to offer new managed services to their customers.
